IS BREAKFAST REALLY THE MAIN MEAL OF THE DAY

We all come across different, often contradictory, opinions on a daily basis about whether breakfast is really the main meal of the day or not. In the past, it was clear, feed the animals first, then yourself. But how do we know that the housekeeper or housekeeper hasn't taken a moment and "thrown" something in his or her mouth before the duties? Nowadays, however, we have a similar situation with time; in the morning we have a lot of duties to do, but work of a different nature than it was in the past. If we think of the contemporary person, instead of manual work, it is the mental work that prevails, often associated with stress. Why are we looking at these aspects of breakfast in this article? It is very simple. Once we have set in the barrel the idea that we go to work, where we have a lot of responsibilities and feel stress, eating becomes more and more challenging. As much as we feel our stomach is "tight", we really do and digestion is not as ideal as we would like it to be. So is it really that important to take a quiet moment in the morning and have breakfast? I may disappoint you, but the answer is not so clear-cut. Studies tell us that breakfast itself, while not the most important meal of the day, is very important to us for a number of factors.

Take a moment for yourself in the morning

Eating is a process that deserves our full attention and not a "hire along the way". It only takes 3-5 deep breaths before eating to calm us down and at least 10 minutes to eat calmly, slowly and mindfully. This "calm eating" factor is very important for preventing stress-related digestive upset. Then, immediately after eating, you may feel bloating, grumbling and pressure in the abdomen and even diarrhea. I am not writing now about reacting to possible intolerances or allergies, but about reacting to "stress (in)digestion".

I absolutely understand moms with kids, when the idea of eating quietly is really unrealistic, but then I would recommend the procedure - I throw something small in my mouth while I'm busy with the kids and when I'm sort of done, I try to sit down to a breakfast that I make as varied and balanced as possible.

Breakfast like a king, dine like a burgher, dine like a serf

Breakfast is the meal we take after at least 10 hours of not eating. During the night, the digestion process takes place, but everything is subdued. Morning is an opportunity to replenish the body with nutrients and energy. We should avoid fast carbohydrates (biscuits, croissants, donuts, doughnuts,...) and prefer a complex meal composed of proteins and fats (eggs, cheese, ham, butter, nuts, yoghurt, cottage cheese, etc.) and complex carbohydrates with fibre (whole grains, cereals, pastries, fruit, vegetables,...). It is in this style that we ensure the replenishment of energy and nutrients, which the body nicely gradually digests and uses as a source of energy. In the morning, the body uses the energy from food more efficiently, hence the saying about the largest portion of food for breakfast. In the evening, on the other hand, we would like to prefer smaller portions and again as complete as possible (protein, fat, carbohydrates with fibre).

By having breakfast we prevent evening cravings for sweets

By providing the body with an intake of nutrients, especially protein, carbohydrates, fats and energy, it is a signal to the body that it is safe, there is plenty to eat and there is nothing to worry about. For many people, it is this factor of skipping meals that causes a big craving for sweets later on. If we are not at peace, feeling stressed, one often reaches for the sweet and does not stop at just a bite. It's perfectly fine to indulge in sweets, but timing is key. We can indulge in sweets in any form after a balanced meal and not as a meal replacement. If a person goes into emotional overdrive, skipping meals even when tired, decisions are often more impulsive, and reaching for the sweet becomes more frequent, it can also become an emotional compensation. We want to have a good relationship with food, we want to enjoy it and derive benefits from it in the form of taste, a pleasant feeling after eating, nutrients, energy. We don't want to compensate for negative feelings.

So what is the answer to the question of whether breakfast is really the most important meal of the day?

We do not like the formula 'it is individual', but I have to use it again in this case. It's not advisable to push your meal to late evening and that's why I'm a proponent of eating breakfast to replenish the energy, nutrients that we should replenish to the body during the day. Eating breakfast also has a psychological aspect to it and can help us avoid big cravings for sweets during the day. We always evaluate the quality of breakfast, which is another key factor. If you're having a chocolate croissant and cappuccino for breakfast because you can't eat anything else... I'd rather wait until 10-11am and make a really varied, balanced breakfast and invest the time to eat it in peace.
